EXECUTION

EP. 03

This is the very first sample that I had created on my own accord. I wanted to go for a mysterious and melancholic feeling that invokes the emotion of nostalgia halfway through. Towards the end, I make use of drums and my sample apparently switches genre to some kind of Rock. As I wanted to focus strictly on a singular genre, the last section of this track was scrapped despite me having a taste for it.

Just as the name suggests, this was my track after the scrapping of the Rock section and this was the version that I had shown to my extra Resource Person and my project Facilitator for vetting. The following displays their critique.

There seems to be a consensus about a peculiar sound that occurs towards the beginning of the song. Among my tracks consisting of ‘crystal’, ‘bells’ and ‘brass’ loops, I together with my facilitator, managed to pinpoint the sound as the chord progression which was in the wrong key and they ultimately managed to provide me with relevant chords as seen above. My resource person, having a large music background additionally provided me with their own pieces of advice as well. With these comments I came closer to creating the final version of my short song which I decided to call ‘De-tach’.

Screenshots of my production on ‘Soundtrap’.

Key changes inspired by the comments I received included a bassline during the hook, a ‘Flanger’ effect on the electric guitar hook and a slightly more poppy drum.

The 2 aspects of my song that sounded the most ‘off’ were the Crystals loop (blue) and the Bellish chord progression (red).

I mixed those tracks further with the rest of the sounds such that they did not stick out like a sore thumb.

  • My final version of the short song is called ‘De-tach’, in reference to detachment. The hyphen is word play on separating the term into 2 parts which symbolizes its theme. I wanted to relay the sorrowful feeling of letting go of a desire with the dreamy sounding electric guitar hook, a common characteristic in Dream Pop. There is a repetition and a slight build-up (Brass-sounding instrument) before the main hook which then acts as a release before picking back up again. The drums included in the second-half have an eccentric sound - native to the genre - to it with the little delays and the song eventually ends with a reverbed choir fading out, leaving an impression of solitude.
